Regenerating Images

Shutterbug Storefront takes your uploaded images and prepares them into display-sized images specifically display for visual browsing in your galleries.

The settings that determine how these images are displayed are primarily determined in the following screens off the administrative menu:

  • "Gallery > Edit Settings > Image size
  • "Gallery > Edit Settings > Protect"

The many factors that you can control are as follows:

  • Size
  • Quality (compression)
  • Sharpness
  • Color correction
  • Watermarking

When image files are initially uploaded into a gallery, the images are prepared for display based on the settings already chosen for that gallery.  If a new gallery is being created at the time of uploading, then the image settings are inherited from the parent gallery.

What is regeneration?

Think in terms of anything that would change how images would look in a gallery:  Any time the image display settings are changed then the gallery (or individual image) needs to be "regenerated."  The process of regeneration is how the Shutterbug Storefront system processes the images stored for display using the new, updated display settings.

Usually, the images are regenerated at the gallery level.  In order for this to occur, you need to be logged in and in the gallery that you want to regenerate.  On the menu:  "Gallery > Regenerate Images"  The process will take awhile, depending on the settings and how many images need to be done.  One the process starts (you'll see it in your browser) you can go on to other things.

Note:  You can also regenerate at the individual photo level.  While having browsed to an individual photo page, you can choose to "Regenerate image" off the "Photo" menu.

Special attention:
Sometimes, the system will prompt you to regenerate.  More often than not, if you know you've made changes to alter the display settings, it is best to go ahead and regenerate the gallery yourself.  Just remember - Regeneration can only be done on a gallery-by-gallery basis.  If you change settings and apply them "downward" to all sub-galleries, you will need to go into each sub-gallery to regenerate the images for the changes to be reflected in the images.  (Also a good reason to plan ahead as to how you want your images to look!)

Things to remember:

  • The "regenerate images" command is context-sensitive.  It only appears when you are in a thumbnail/gallery view and WILL ONLY work when you are in a gallery that has images.  (It will not work in a gallery with only thumbnails of sub-galleries.)
  • Always remember to refresh your browser when you return to a page to look at the changes after a regeneration of images, so the changes will be evident.
  • Remember that changing any of the above settings from the list will require a regeneration of images, even if you are not prompted to do so.
  • Remember that once a display photo is set to a specific size, regeneration will not resize the image larger, only smaller.  (Example:  A 500 pixel display image will not regenerate into a 560 pixel image.)
