File resolutions & dimensions

For all our photos and photo products, we recommend a minimum of 150 dpi but nothing more than 300 dpi is required. (DPI refers to "pixels per inch, or PPI)  What does that translate to in pixels?

For a 4x6, at 300 ppi, that then means the following: 4 inches x 300 ppi = 1200 pixels, and 6 inches x 300 ppi = 1800 pixels. So for a 4x6 at 300 dpi/ppi, you would use a 1200x1800 file or greater to ensure adequate resolution.

In most cases, prints larger than 11x14 should be set for 150 dpi to keep file sizes manageable.

For additional information on preparing your images, see the related post on our blog.  Also, see our resolution chart here.
